Surrealism
Surrealism began all the way back in the 1920’s as a cultural movement for writing and visual art. When seeing Surrealistic Photographs, it is shocking to see the strange, odd photos and objects incorporated into this picture. Surrealism is really known for expressing oneself through the different arrangements of objects to create a photo. This movement was helping change people’s philosophy and social theories all around the world.
With Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx, Surrealist believed it was a way of showing your imagination, and expresses the contradiction with the world. Surrealism brought on a change within the world. Surrealist tried their best to create a subconscious mind, and their own interest into others. Back in the mid 1920’s, they had meetings in cafes to discuss theories and techniques for surrealism, and with the visual art they created they were hoping to give out a message. As surrealism began to expand, people from all different arts came along to spread the message, such as musicians and poets. Artist like E.L.T Mesens, known for his music career, helped in Surrealist movement in Belgian. Surrealism also brought on political problems, and was said to be a split between anarchists and communist, Surrealist being communist. André Breton, leader of surrealism, continued to encourage surrealism by spreading the importance of expressing the human mind with the publication of The Tower of Light in 1952. Even after returning to France after the war, he influenced those to liberate their minds.
The Surrealism Movement changed a lot of things that still affect us today. People can express their feelings, and thoughts in many ways and in different arts. We have artist who express their experiences through music, photography, paintings, and much more. Surrealism has changed today’s philosophy and now people can communicate and send their message through art.
